Glendale, Arizona

The branch of dentistry that corrects tooth and jaw positioning is orthodontics. Proper tooth spacing and position, as well as jaw alignment is important not only to the appearance and attractiveness of your smile, but also to the health of your teeth.

Mal-positioned teeth that are crooked, overlapping, or crowded can be difficult to brush and floss properly and can be at great risk of cavities, while jaws that do not align correctly can cause problems like tooth grinding, TMJ disorders, and can even alter the shape of your face.

Do I Need Orthodontic Work?

If you have have an overbite giving you the appearance of being “buck-toothed”, an underbite pushing your lower teeth farther out than your upper teeth, if your teeth to not come together in the front, leaving an open gap into your mouth when your jaw is closed, or another incorrect alignment of your jaw, you should schedule an appointment with your Glendale cosmetic dentist to discuss whether you need orthodontic treatment for your teeth. Similarly, if you have teeth that overlap, are crooked, are so close they are difficult to floss between, or alternately have large gaps and spaces between them, you should speak with a dentist to see if Glendale braces are the best option for you.

What Treatments Are Available?

Orthodontics in Glendale usually involve using an appliance to guide your teeth or jaw to a new position, or to change the growth pattern of growing children or adolescents. These appliances may be fixed devices that are bonded to your teeth and cannot be removed except by your Glendale dentist at your appointment, or there are removeable options that can be taken out while you clean your teeth or eat. Speak to an Arizona cosmetic dentist about what options would be best to adjust your teeth.

The most well-known orthodontic appliance are traditional metal braces in Arrowhead that are attached to the teeth and used to move them into the proper positions. There are new braces options available that may be less visible such as Inspire’s clear brackets, or the entirely removable aligner trays used by Invisalign and ClearCorrect treatment systems.

Other orthodontic treatments in Glendale can include:

  • external headgear for jaw positioning adjustment
  • fixed or removable retainers to prevent teeth from moving out of their newly adjusted locations
  • palatal expanders used to widen the arch of the jaw
  • and other devices

Orthodontic Disorders

Crossbite

A crossbite is an orthodontic disorder in which the top teeth rest on the inner side of the lower teeth instead of resting slightly outwards. Crossbites are more common with teeth located at the sides. Crossbites should be treated early while the jawbones are still expanding. These bones fuse at around 16 years for girls and 19 years for boys. Problems caused by crossbites include gum disease, bone loss, difficulty in chewing, jaws losing symmetry, etc. If a single tooth is affected by crossbite, the dentist treats it with Glendale braces. For multiple teeth, jaw expanders are used to reduce crowding between teeth.

Open bite

An open bite is a condition in which the top front teeth do not come in contact with their opposite teeth. When a person affected by this condition closes his mouth to bite, it is possible to see inside his mouth because the upper and lower front teeth do not meet. Genetics, thumb-sucking, and lisping can cause an open bite. Treatment for open bite involves surgery on the upper jaw. The patient is made to wear braces for a few months before the surgery. Typically, treatment for open bite can take between one-and-half to two years.

Overbite

Overbite is a common orthodontic condition also known as buck teeth. In this condition the top teeth overlap the lower teeth. Genetics and actions such as thumb-sucking and pencil-chewing can lead to overbite in children. When children repeatedly thrust their tongue against the back of the top teeth while swallowing, it pushes the teeth out. Children affected by overbite can hurt their protruding front teeth easily. The lower teeth may hit the root of the upper teeth when chewing. Till the age of nine children should be treated with a functional appliance that helps the lower jaw to develop properly. After this, the child should wear Arrowhead braces till the lower teeth come together and the upper teeth are pushed up.

Overjet

Overjet is a condition in which the upper front teeth protrude too far ahead of the lower teeth. Overjet can happen if the molars are not properly aligned, the bones of the upper and lower jaw are not balanced, upper incisors flare and come out, lower teeth are missing, or from thumb sucking. The risks of not treating overjet include injury to the protruding front teeth, uneven jaw growth, and teeth may wear out early. In the first stage of the treatment overjet is treated with braces to align the teeth. Coils, springs, and headgear are used in the second stage to push back the front upper teeth and push out the front lower teeth.

Underbite

In an underbite the lower front teeth extend outwards. The medical term for underbite is prognathism. An underdeveloped upper jaw and overdeveloped lower jaw are characteristic features of an underbite. It can be caused by excessive thumb sucking, nasal obstruction, and tongue thrusting. If not treated, an underbite can lead to poor functioning of the teeth and digestive problems. Underbites can be treated without surgery utill the patient reached puberty; therefore an early diagnosis is critical. Your dentist will try to modify jaw and teeth growth using headgear and braces. Treatment done at a later stage involves teeth extraction and surgery to correct the structure of the jaws.

Schedule an appointment with Dr. Greg Ceyhan, a licensed general Glendale dentist, to discuss any orthodontic concerns you have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Orthodontic Dentistry

Orthodontic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that aims to prevent and correct irregularities in teeth. Teeth and jaws that are positioned incorrectly can be treated with the help of orthodontics. Crooked teeth are difficult to clean and they increase the stress on chewing muscles. This leads to neck and back pain. Glendale orthodontic options are available for patients of all ages. Orthodontic treatment aligns the teeth, improves the appearance, and increase the life of the teeth.

A: No. Often, potential Glendale AZ patients notice a problem with crooked teeth, spacing, and /or a bad bite on their own. Some general dentists refer patients, but you can call our office directly at 623-979-1515 or fill out our new patient appointment request tab if you notice a problem.
A: Dr. Ceyhan believes it’s never too late for an amazing smile. In fact, about thirty percent of our orthodontic patients are adults. People in their 50’s, 60’s, and even 70’s have become our patients. Adult treatments may include traditional metal brace, clear braces, and Clear Correct / Invisalignhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4Pkm96hyd8
A: Absolutely. In some cases, Glendale orthodontic treatment will actually move the remaining teeth into the correct alignment so that the dentist can place a more ideal restoration, like a crown, bridge, or implant. Even if you have a crown on your tooth, it will move just as easily as any other tooth.
A: Having crooked teeth can often lead to a bad bite, which means your teeth don’t fit together properly so they are wearing unevenly. Without treatment, excessive wear can cause cracked teeth and lead to more dental work. Orthodontic treatment can improve function, creating teeth that last longer, work more efficiently, and usually look better. Because properly brushing and flossing your teeth is more difficult with crooked teeth, having a straighter smile will promote proper oral hygiene and keep teeth healthy for the rest of your life.
A: Not really. Usually, these ads refer to porcelain veneers, which will cover your front teeth and mask the crookedness. Orthodontic treatment will straighten your teeth without any type of covering.
A: Just call us at 623-979-1515 or request a complimentary consultation on the Web site. Our Glendale AZ dental team at Aesthetic Dentistry of Arrowhead will be happy to schedule an appointment for you or your child.
A: Nothing. An orthodontic evaluation at our office is complimentary! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9dEVzXGApY
A: During your first dental visit with Aesthetic Dentistry of Arrowhead, you will fill out some brief paperwork and then Dr. Ceyhan will thoroughly examine the alignment of your teeth and jaws. The doctor will review the findings with you, present all your treatment options, and answer any questions you may have regarding this information.
A: Once Dr. Ceyhan can complete a thorough orthodontic evaluation, he can let you know if you need orthodontic treatment, the recommended plan, and how long therapy will last. He will also review cost estimates and insurance coverage. Dr. Ceyhan will also answer any questions that may apply to your specific case.
A: According to the American Association of Orthodontists, you should schedule your child’s first orthodontic evaluation around age seven. At this time, the six-year molars, laterals, and central incisors are in place, and your child’s jaw growth pattern will be more obvious. Early detection helps with the diagnosis and prevention of many potential problems. In many cases, the doctor may not recommend early treatment, but Dr. Ceyhan will monitor your child’s growth and development so that he can recommend the best, most efficient treatment for your child’s individual needs.
A: No. The space available for the permanent teeth and the jaw growth pattern will not change on its own and may become more noticeable as your child ages.
A: With some orthodontic problems, early intervention is recommended, which is why orthodontists like Dr. Ceyhan suggest an early orthodontic evaluation. Then, your orthodontist can monitor the growth and development of your child to identify the right time for orthodontic treatment. Dr. Ceyhan strongly believes most orthodontic treatment can be accomplished in one phase of orthodontic treatment if timed properly.
A: For children who have skeletal or dental orthodontic problems that need to be addressed early on, we may recommend early treatment. Issues that may warrant early treatment include cross bites, harmful habits such as thumb sucking, premature loss of baby teeth, and severe skeletal growth problems. Dr. Ceyhan only recommends early interceptive treatment for orthodontic problems that have been SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN to be beneficial for early intervention. Again, most treatment is best accomplished in ONE PHASE of treatment.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tnn2jxPWaLs
A: Yes, possibly. Early treatment is designed to handle any major issues that need early intervention. After your child’s early treatment is completed, your child will then be placed on recall to best time any possible further needed treatment.
A: An expander helps coordinate the alignment of the upper and lower jaw to correct cross bites. Cross bites can cause unhealthy shifts in the functioning of the jaws unless corrected. Dr. Ceyhan will evaluate your child’s case to see if an expander will help with treatment.
A: Sometimes. Dr. Ceyhan works to create a beautiful appearance with teeth in the right place. At times, Dr. Ceyhan will recommend removal of teeth to achieve the most stable, aesthetically pleasing results. When teeth are removed, all spaces will be closed and no one will notice where teeth were extracted once treatment is completed. With proper timing of treatment, the use of advanced, next generation braces in Glendale, along with space-age wires in our orthodontic office, the need for removal of teeth is kept at a minimum.
A: The treatment course depends on several factors, like the severity of the bite and patient cooperation. Patients can take a few months or a few years to correct their bites. During a complimentary orthodontic evaluation at Dr. Ceyhan’s office, he can evaluate your case and determine an individualized plan for treatment.
A: Your orthodontic treatment costs will depend on the severity of the case and the time required to correct bite issues. Call our office to schedule a complimentary orthodontic evaluation in Dr. Ceyhan’s office. At that time, he can review the fees, determine insurance coverage, and discuss financing options. We will also file your insurance on your behalf.
A: When your braces are placed, we will review the steps for keeping teeth clean. A team member will also demonstrate how to properly brush with the braces and the use of night time fluoride treatments. For successful orthodontic treatment, patients need to maintain clean teeth and healthy gums.

A: Yes. Our office will give you a list of foods that can easily break or loosen the braces that you can hang on your fridge. Some of the foods listed include nuts, chewy foods like taffy or caramel, raw vegetables, ice, and hard candy. To decrease the chances of cavities and decalcification, patients should also avoid sugary and carbonated drinks.
A: Usually, appointments are scheduled about five to six weeks apart. The wires that we use provide gentler forces for longer periods of time, which means you don’t need orthodontic adjustments as frequently, but your teeth are moving more efficiently with modern orthodontic appliances. Clear Correct / Invisalign patients can also set longer appointment intervals, and we will prepare your aligner sets to fit your busy schedule.
A: If you don’t want traditional orthodontia, Clear Correct / Invisalign is the clear choice. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for Clear Correct / Invisalign. During a complimentary orthodontic evaluation, Dr. Ceyhan will evaluate your case and explain whether Clear Correct / Invisalign can give you the desired results.
A: We will work hard to schedule most appointments after school. However, Dr. Ceyhan will have times when they need longer appointments with your child, and these are scheduled during school time. Longer appointments usually involve placing, removing, and repairing the braces. Because most appointments are kept to a minimum and our office RUNS ON TIME, your child will miss very little school.
A: When you receive a new appliance, whether braces or Clear Correct / Invisalign, your mouth will have an adjustment period. Patients sometimes feel a little sore for a few days, but your teeth will soon adjust.

A: No injections are given when we put on braces.
A: Usually you can. At different times, Dr. Ceyhan may need to speak with you to review treatment progress. Please let our front office know your plans before you leave so that we can make necessary arrangements.
A: No. Our practice does not use recycled braces. Each patient gets a set of new braces.
A: Yes. For anyone participating in sport activities, we recommend getting an orthodontic mouth guard to protect your teeth.
A: Yes. You may need a little time to adjust if you play wind or brass instruments, but after a short time, braces usually don’t interfere with your performance.
A: Luckily, orthodontic emergencies happen very rarely. If a situation occurs you can reach us at 623-979-1515. In most cases, you can resolve the emergency by referencing our Website or we can walk you through the steps over the phone.
A: Absolutely. You will receive regular checkups and cleanings from your general dentist. Our doctors recommend that patients visit their family dentists every three to six months.
