Guide To Phoenix Dentures

Guide to Phoenix Dentures

Dentures aren’t just for the elderly. There are a number of reasons why you might need to get dentures, such as to replace unhealthy teeth or to create a straighter and nicer looking smile. If you live in Phoenix Arizona, there are a number of dental providers who offer all kinds of dentures to meet your needs. Here’s what you need to know about dentures in Phoenix:

Different Types of Dentures

The dentures that most people think of when they think of dentures are complete dentures. These provide a complete set of teeth. Before getting complete dentures, all of your teeth must be removed, and the gums must be allowed to heal, which may take up to eight to 12 weeks.

Immediate dentures may be available that can be worn immediately after the teeth have been removed. However, once the mouth heals, the gums or bones may have shrunk, which can require a new set of dentures. Immediate dentures are usually considered a temporary measure so that you don’t have to go without teeth while your mouth heals.

If you don’t need to have all of your teeth removed, or don’t want them all removed, partial dentures are available. Partial dentures consist of a few teeth mounted on a plastic base. Partial dentures are preferred when you want to replace a few teeth and don’t want to allow surrounding teeth to change position.

Dentures can also be fabricated for cosmetic reasons. Cosmetic dentures can address a wide range of issues, including misaligned teeth, crooked teeth, gaps in teeth, discoloration, and misshapen teeth. Any person who has healthy gums is eligible to get cosmetic dentures. Gum ridges are required to ensure that the dentures stay in place.

Caring for Your Dentures

Just like you would take care of your teeth, you must properly take care of your dentures to keep them healthy and prolong their life. Caring for dentures is similar to caring for your teeth, with some slight changes.

To start, you should brush your dentures every day, just like you would your own teeth. Daily brushing helps to remove plaque and to prevent staining. A soft-bristled toothbrush is required for dentures, since a hard-bristled brush can scratch them. Even if you can’t brush after every meal, you should at least rinse off your dentures.

Overnight, dentures should be placed in water or a specialty solution to keep them moist. If dentures dry out, they can lose their shape or even crack over time. Some soaking solutions also include cleaning agents to help brighten and sanitize dentures.

Any time you clean, rinse or soak your dentures, you must use great care. They can be bent, broken or otherwise damaged if they are handled too roughly or dropped.
